MONEY FROM METERS
£45,642 For Year
Silver coins which kept Christchurch's parking meters ticking over last year contributed £45,642 to the City Council. This year the council has estimated receipts at £46,000. In the estimates approved by the City Council last evening, two new sets of traffic lights were charged to the account for the coming year —£6ooo for the Carlton corner and £3OOO for an installation still to be decided Another sum of £3OOO. similar to last year’s is put to the replacement reserve for mechanisms. £5OOO is estimated for the maintenance of meters (£2966 was the actual cost last year) and £6560 is provided for the purchase of another 164 meters.
A new item is £llOO for the meter maids’ salaries. The car park in Tuam street produced £9939 in revenue last year, and £9960 is estimated for the current year; but set against this is payments cf £12,550, which includes £8250 as an instalment on the cost of purchasing the land. A final payment of £7875 is due on April 1. 1963.
The account began the year with a credit balance of £415 after meeting the charges against parking meters and the parking lots in Tuam street, Latimer square and Lichfield street (£46,718).
