TENNIS Australia High In Seeding Lists

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright)

LONDON, June 19 R. Laver, the defending champion, and Miss M. Smith, both Australians, have been made official favourites for the two Wimbledon singles events, play for which will begin next Monday. The seeding lists announced today show an Australian domination. with the United States a bad second and Britain practically nowhere. Miss C. Truman, although she reached the final last year and almost won the title, has been banished from the 'women's list, and Miss A. Mortimer, the reigning champion, is dropped to No. 6. Their joint slump was not expected in view of the allround strength of this year's women’s entry. It is the first time since 1957 —when she reached the semi-finals—that Miss Truman has been ignored, and since her first seeding a year later she has held the No. 1. 2, and 3 spots.

With R. Laver seeded 1, R. Emerson 2, and N. Fraser 3, it will be surprising if

Australia fails to produce the winner of the men’s singles. A fourth Australian, R Hewitt, gets in at No. 8— apparently at the expense of M. Sangster. who was ignored, in spite of reaching the semi-finals of both the Wimbledon and American championships last year. Seeded players, with last year’s seedings in parenthesis, are:—
