Sportsman’s Notebook TABLE TENNIS TITLES START TOMORROW

This season's Canterbury table tennis championships, which commence tomorrow evening, will give local admintatoaitors a useful practice run in preparation foe the national title meeting, which will be held in Christchurch at the end of Aututt. This is the fl ret time that the national meeting has been in Christchurch since 1950

Hrod na the seedings in tomorrow's men’s and women's singles events are the titleArmstrong and Mirs J. Shcsdbolt. both of the Eagles dub. Their form so far this season has been good but they may be hard-pressed to beet the second seed? in their events, B. A Foster and Miss V Bnaumann. of Dunedin's North-East Valley Club Foster and Mirs Braumann beat Armstrong and Mrs ShadbcM in singles events wben Canterbury and Otago teams met in the quadrangular tournament in Invercargill this month. Armstrong and Foster have had many stirring struggles over the last two seasons and. if tihrse players meet in the Canterbury final on Sunday afternoon, an excellent match should result. The score is always close, with Foster taking the attack and Armstrong on defence. The men's singles field gains interest from the presence of the Wellintton nlayers, W. N .Evans and R L Foo'er. and they could cause upsets. Evans beat Armstrong last week when Wellington played Canterbury, and Foster defeated his higher-ranked brother in last year’s South Canterbury titles, and in a South Island semi-final several years ago in Christ church. Pressing Mrs Shadbolt and Miss; Braumann in the women's singles will be F Inglis and Mrs J Prisk Miss Inglis recently defeated Mrs Shadbolt in an interclub match, and Mrs Prisk 1? in fine form. It is hard to understand why Mrs Prisk is seeded only fifth, behind Mrs T. May. Mrs Prisk has recorded 11 wins and 10 losses in inter-club competition. against Mrs May’s one victory and 20 losses. Both iplav in the A grade. The brothers Fos’er will ibe very hard to boat in the men’s doubles, as they have ' a fine understands’ from vears of play together V N Brightwell and T. R D Flint, seeded second, would not appear to be in the same class. Mrs Shadbolt and South Canterbury’s Mrs J. Brown should retain the women's doubles title, and B. A. Foster and Miss V. Braumann will defend their mixed doubles title.

Entries are large—a total of 223 in senior and junior events. Players from Nelson. Marlborough. South Canterbury, Otago and Wellington will compete in addition to all the leading local players

I Top seeds in the under-18 boys’ and girls’ singles are D, T. Mcßride and Miss J Rich. They will face strong opposition from the second seeds P. Ives and Miss J Goodchap, who also head the seedings in the under-16 events. ¥ ¥ ¥ Soccer Points With one round to be played, Neerlandia and New Brighton share first placing in the first division soccer competition for the Keys Cup.
