Magistrate’s Court DISQUALIFIED DRIVER SENT TO PRISON FOR MONTH

Appearing for sentence before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, SAI, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge ol driving while disqualified in Moorhouse avenue on March 15. Card Adriaan Van Rees, aged 28, a workman, was sent to prison for a month.

Van Rees pleaded guilty to the charge last week, having been disqualified for 10 years in the Invercargill Magistrate's Count in 1958.

Before being sentenced, Van Rees told the Court that his wife had been unable to drive him to work because two of their children were ill. He said he had to be at work at 7 am. and as there was no bus he drove the car. This was a deliberate offence and there were other types of transport available, said the Magistrate. He cancelled -the accused's licence for a further year. WOMAN GAOLED

Pleading guilty to a charge of being found drunk in Cathedral square at 10.30 p.m. on June 18 and admitting four convictions for a similar offence during the last six months. Doreen Francis Paviell, aged 39, was sent to prison for seven days.

Sergeant V. F. Townshend said the accused had 12 previous convictions, mostly for drunkenness. From the dock, Paviell said -that if she had her baby given back to her she would not drink again. Before imposing sentence the Magistrate stood the case down so he could consult a probation officer's report on the accused. When die case was again called the Magistrate said he had read the probation officer's report and there was a very good reason why the child had not been returned. "There is only one thing to do. put you in prison,’’ he said. STOLE CHILD’S CLOTHING Pleading guilty to a charge of theft of child's clothing, valued at £3 10s 9d. from the Wellington Hospital Board on May 29, a girl, whose name was suppressed, was convicted and remanded on bail until June 25 for sentence. Sergeant Townshend said that the clothing was found in a room that had been occupied by the accused on May 31. inquiries were made and the accused was located living with a Maori at Tuahiwi. She at first denied the theft but la 4 er admitted taking the clothes from the hospital. DROVE WITHOUT DUE CARE On a charge of driving without due care and attention in Langdons road on February 19, Edward Thomas Rumens, a timber yard worker (Mr A. V. Wilding), was

convicted and fined £3. He pleaded not guilty. The defendant pleaded guil'.y to having no driver’s licence on the same date and was convicted and fined £5. A further charge against Rumens of failing to report damage to another vehicle was dismissed. He denied the charge.

FINED £lO Garth Morrison Brown was fined £lO on a charge of failing to yield the right of way at the corner of Worcester street and Tancred street on March 21. He pleaded not guilty and was represented by Mr D. J. Hill. The charge arose out of a collision between a car driven by Brown and one driven by Bernard Dewis Collins. CHARGE DENIED On a charge of failing to yield the right of way at a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Manchester street and Worcester street on February 21, John Keith Hearfield was convicted and fined £2. He denied the charge and conducted his own defence.

CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against Thomas David Sheddon of driving without due care and attention in Centaurus road on February 20 was dismissed. He pleaded not guilty and was not represented by counsel. CIVIL CASES
