LETTER BOX BLASTS
Celebrations In Canberra
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, June 19. Police records disclosed that at least 200 Canberra letter boxes had been blasted and badly damaged during Commonwealth Day fireworks celebrations, a councillor told last night’s meeting of the Australian Capital Territory Advisory Council. But, said the councillor, Mrs A. P. Dalgarno, the real figure was probably more like 500 letter-boxes, as most damaged boxes would not have been reported. Mrs Dalgarno produced at the meeting her own badlydamaged letter-box and a 6in long ‘‘double-banger’’ of the type she believed had been used. The council decided that: The Minister for the Interior (Mr, Freeth) be asked to issue instructions that explosives should not be sold to any child apparently under the age of 13 and anyone contravening this ban to be liable to a fine of up to £5. The Minister be asked to prohibit the sale in the A.CT. of fireworks with more than a fixed amount of explosive and of fireworks encased in any material other than paper or cardboard. The sale of fireworks in the A.C.T be limited to May 17 to 24 inclusive.
