N.Z. Winners In First Round

A.-Reuter—Copy rig nt) LONDON. May 19. New Zealanders had early round successes when the qualifying tournament for the Wimbledon lawn tennis championships began yesterday. Sixty-four men and 64 women are competing for eight remaining places in both the men's and women's singles. The championships start on Monday. J. B. Souter, R. N. Hawkes and R. G. Clarke won their first round matches in the men's singles, and Miss Glenie won a game in the women's singles. Results were: Women’s Singles First Round—Miss H W Vallen (Britain) beat Miss V. « - Fladgate (New Zealand), fl-i. 8-6; Miss M. J. Glenie (New Zealand) beat Miss D. C. Tuckey (Britain), 2-6. 9-7, 6-2. Women’s Doubles - Green and Miss M Sr ”ith (New Zealand) beat Miss S. P. Elliott and Miss V M. Ress (Britain): Miss V. M Fladgate and Miss M. J. Glenie (New Zealand) beat Miss M. Lee and Miss A. L. Owen (Britain). 6-4, 2-6. 6-1: Miss P. Belton and Miss J. Davidson New Zealand) beat Miss J. D Morris (South Africa) and Miss B. Pratt (Australia), 6-2. 6-3: Miss V. R. Cox and Miss C. M Leather (Britain) beat Miss S. M. Hannah (Britain) and Miss S. E. Rich (New Zealand), 6-e o lrs r, M Wagstaff and Mrs R B. R. Wilson (Britain) beat Miss D. Howe and Miss J. Howe (Australia). 6-2. 6-1.
