TROTTING Outstanding Record Of Henry T. Adios

Henry T. Adios will add tremendous interest to the Good Time Pace, the second race of the 1962 international pacing series at Yonkers Raceway, New York, on Friday. Henry T. Adios is a four-year-old and is one of the youngest American horses to have contested the series. Most American owners and trainers prefer to keep their top horses for rich races restricted to four-year-olds rather than race them against older, seasoned horses.

Henry T. Adios was last season’s top three-year-old pacer and he was one of the main contributors to more than 800,000 dollars won by members of S. Dancer’s big team.

Henry T. Adios won 132.634 dollars last season, placing him at the head of his age group and fourth among the 12 horses to win more than 100.000 dollars during the season. The list was headed by his stablemate, the brilliant trqtter, Su Mac Lad, which won 245.750 dollars, followed by Adios Butler with 180,250 dollars and Apmat with 159,925 dollars.

Henry T. Adios had 28 starts last season for 15 wins and 11 placings. His wins included The Little Brown Jug, which, although not the richest as far as stakes are concerned, is regarded as one of the top classics for three-year-old pacers. The winner of the race is considered in the same light as the winner of the Hambletonian, the main event on the calendar for three-year-old trotters.

Henry T. Adois finished second to Way Wave in his qualifying heat won in 2min 1 l-ssec. The first five placegetters in each heat met in the next heat, which Henry T. Adios won in Imin 58 4-5 sec. The three heat winners met in the final, which Henry T. won by a wide margin after pacing his final quarter in 28 2-ssec. Like most of the progeny of his sire, Adios, Henry T. Adois has extreme speed. He showed that in his many wins on major courses throughout the United States. He broke two minutes on three occasions at three years, his best time being Imin 58sec at Lexington, Kentucky. The same day he paced one mile in Imin 58 2-5 sec.

Raced by Dr. and Mrs N Derrico, Henry T. Adois is out of Great Hanover, which took a record of 2min 6 2-5 sec for one mile as a three-year-old. She was by Nibble Hanover, which took a record of Imin 58jsec for one mile in a race at the trotting gait. Nibble Hanover is the sire of Knight Dream, which is the sire of Stormy Dream, another candidate for the Yonkers series. Twelfth Contest Friday's race will be the twelfth for the Good Time Pace, which was first run in 1950, the year that Yonkers Raceway opened. It has been run over distances of from one mile to one mile and a half. Last year's race, won by Apmat from False Step and Bye Bye Byrd, was run over one mile and a quarter, the same distance as Friday’s race.

Nominations, at a fee of 100 dollars, closed for the race on April 1 last. In addition there is a starting fee oT 1000 dollars, which was payable on Monday. All fees are added to the stake, which is expected to exceed 65,000 dollars. Last year the total stake was 62.800, of which Apmat received 31.400 dollars and False Step 15,700 dollars.

Thirty-three horses were entered for the race, but it was possible for late entry to be made at a supplementtary fee of 7500 dollars five days before the event. Of the 33 original entries 10 were bred in Australia or New Zealand. They were Aldora, Apmat. Arania. Caduceus, False Step. Fitment, James Scott. Lookaway. Patchwork and Scottish Command.

Apmat, False Step, James Scott and Patchwork were the only ones of the 10 to earn a start in the event which in the past has been won by champions as Good Time, Scottish Pence. Direct Rhythm, Adios Harry, Diamond Hal and Bye Bye Byrd,

the last-named being the only horse to have won the event on two occasions.

Lookaway and Aldora were considered as possible starters right up to the end of last week. Aldora was expected to have his first start in America for his New York owner, Mr J. Wilsker. last Friday, while it had been expected that Lookaway, which had been working in splendid style in the previous fortnight, was expected to have raced last Saturday night. However, no advice regarding the performances of either horses has been received in Christchurch. If they started they cannot have raced well enough to have earned themselves a start in Friday's race.
