Authority Suspends Petrol Pump Licence

An application from K. W. Singleton to take over a licence for a pump at store premises at Upper Riccarton was refused yesterday by the Motor Spirits Licensing Authority (Messrs R. W Edgley, J. L. Hazlitt and H L. Wise) and the licence was suspended pending notice of revocation.

Singleton (Mr D. J. Clark' applied to take over the licence from D. and N O'Connor for one pump at store premises at the corner of Yaldhurst and Racecourse roads and to shift the pump to a new site immediately across Yaldhurst road, where it is proposed to build a service station.

The application was opposed by E C Britnell. Ltd (Mr G, S Brockett), who had applied to change the retail selling point of two pumps from 25 Middlepark road to a proposed new service station at the corner of Avonhead and Yaldhurst roads, a distance of about 300 yards. The two cases were heard in conjunction.

The application was also opposed by the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association (Mr W. J. Waddell), the Russley Service Station (Mr B. S. McLaughlan). and A C. Rhodes, Ltd. (Mr B. A Barrer). Figures “Misleading” In refusing to grant the application, Mr Edgley, for the Authority, said that the figures given by the present holder of the licence were "deliberately misleading.” They bore no relation to actuality and his evidence was very vague and evasive. It seemed that Singleton and his backer were largely danc-

ing to a tune played by the petrol wholesaler.

Since the present holder, on his own evidence, admitted that the public was not receiving adequate service from the pump, the Authority suspended the licence and will give notice of its revocation.

The Authority granted the application of E. C. Britnell, Ltd., subject to restrictions on sales after 6 p.m. and at week-ends.

An application by Wright. Stephenson and Company. Ltd. (Mr G. S. Brockett) for a licence to sell from two pumps to be installed in a screened position at new garage premises in King street. Temuka. was refused. It was opposed by Talbot Service Station (Mr H. W. Hunter).
