Efforts To Deal With Subdivision Flooding
Various forms of flooding problems had occurred after the building up of land being developed for subdivision, Mr F. R. Price, the chairman, said to the Christchurch Drainage Board meeting las’, evening. The board and the City Council had discussed the problem and action had been decided, but some residents had not co-operated. Properties which had been built on for some time had found themselves with considerable water, often because they had been deprived of neighbouring “ponding” areas. Mr Price said. After complaints over a number of years in some areas, the board and the council held joint discussions last year. The council had taken steps which it was hoped would obviate further
troubles Both authorities, he said, had also agreed on a scheme of joint action on existing problems where a relatively inexpensive solution was possible. Acting for both authorities, the board had approached residents in Buckleys road. Butterfield avenue. Grants road. Rayburn aveune, Kerrs road. Perry street, Tenby place and Breezes road, with an explanation of the problems and a request for cooperation on routes for proposed drains. Fifty-three letters were sent to owners. Only 24 had replied. Some proposed other solutions to avoid any inconvenience to themselves or made other difficulties, Mr Price said. “The board has neither the staff nor the time to follow up these matters indefinitely and property owners in the area concerned should remember that this' joint effort by the council and the board represents a last official attempt to deal with these matters,” he said. “Non co-operation of some property owners would have an adverse effect on all in the areas concerned.”
