RACING McCool Fit For Race At Ashburton

Mr J. F. Tutton, trainer and part-owner of McCool, will return from an overseas holiday today to find his Balloch gelding fit for immediate racing.

McCool, which has been under the care of C. McDonald in the last few weeks, did one of the best gallops at Riccarton yesterday’. He has his next race in the Maronan Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday.

Training yesterday was done on the No. 7 grass, ■which was soft and slippery. McCool (C. McDonald) •printed six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec, the last three in 40 3-ssec.

McDonald will ride McCool at Ashburton. Derailment (W. Beck) ran six furlongs easily in Imin 27 2-ssec, the final three in 43 4-ssec. He will have a big following in the Maronan Handicap after a fast-finishing fifth in the open sprint at Oamaru last Saturday. The former North Islander. Spartacus (M. J. Skelton) ran six furlongs in Imin 25sec, the final three in 42 3-ssec.

He should make an impression against the hack stayers in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton. Ham (A. J. Stokes) and Reclaim (R. Thompson) recorded Imin 23 l-ssec for the last six furlongs of their work. Fresh Start Reclaim will make another •tart after a lengthy

absence from racing in the steeplechase at Ashburton. He has shown fair ability as a jumper, but it has not been easy to keep him sound.

Mike (M. J. Skelton) and Araphoe (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) were abreast finishing six furlongs in imin 24 2-ssec, the last three in 42 4-ssec.

Araphoe, a sister of the good galloper Cheyenne, starts a fresh campaign at Ashburton.

Coral Chief (O. Anning) handled the ground better than Cheyenne (C. T. Wilson) while running their mile in Imin 54 2-ssec. They were not above three-quarter pace for the first two furlongs, but ran the final three furlongs fairly briskly in 43 3-ssec. Cheyenne is top-weight and Coral Chief is on the minimum in the Maronan Handicap at Ashburton.

Seasoned Runner The more-seasoned Coral Chief could be the brighter prospect, especially if the ground becomes heavy. Count Pedro (A. H. Eastwood) and Last Mate (R. McDonald) were on terms clear of Joyvine (G. W. Mein) finishing three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. Timna (M. J.' Wildermoth) and Certainly (A. J. Stokes) sprinted six furlongs, the last three in 40 4-ssec. The stablemates, Corduroy (C. T. Wilson) and Water Boy (P. J. Kempton) ran six furlongs in Imin 23 3-ssec, the final three in 42 3-ssec.

Corduroy will make a fresh start after an enforced spell in the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Shakes (R. Thompson). Argus <B. S Finlayson), and Yosemite (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) showed good speed in the conditions to run three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Tidal Wave (G. W. Mein) worked away easily from the mile and took Imin 28 2-ssec for the final six furlongs. He has won two of his last three races, and has a chance of improving a good record in the Mayfield Hack at Ashburton. where he was a winner in May. Abou Ben Adhem (B. W. McDonald) ran three furlongs easily in 43 2-ssec. In his present form he should take beating in the first leg of the double at Ashburton.

Waverley (G. W Mein) had Paua (M. J. Skelton) well beaten for early speed in a six-furlong trial, and went away to a wide lead. Paua picked up ground in the

straight, but could not draw level. Waverley ran the distance in Imin 25sec. and the last three furlongs in 43sec. Golden Howe (R. B. Taggart), Count Pierre (L. McGuire), and Navarone (A. Swanston) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 23 3-ssec. Francisco (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) followed in Imin 2a l-ssec. He will race at the South Canterbury winter meeting. Fair Chase (R. L. Browning), a good galloper but a disappointing racehorse, led Crackers (R. B. Taggart) and Sumptuous (G. W. Mein) by four lengths after running six furlongs in Imin 22 l-ssec, the last three in 41 4-ssec. Gambol (A. H. Eastwood) rounded off her work with three furlongs in 42 l-ssec.

Timatan (W. Beck) and Knight (R. L. Browning) ran a mile and On Account (B. W. McDonald) joined them for the last six furlongs, run in Imin 24 l-ssec.
