VEGETABLE COLOURING

Warning From Department (N Z. Press- Association) WELLINGTON, June 19. Medical officers of health will take action against any vegetable processors suspected of colouring their products—fresh, canned, frozen or dried —for human consumption. The Department of Health, in a circular to medical officers of health, says that during recent investigations a firm admitted adding colouring matter to dried peas. A representative of another firm said all dried peas were now coloured, and claimed packers had the department’s authority to use harmless colours on this vegetable. However, there had never been any authority for adding artificial colour, or artificially colouring vegetables in any form. The department, in advising medical officers of health to take action against those suspected of colouring their products, says it is possible that coloured peas are being produced for export. If this is so, producers should be warned that the department regards as most serious any laxity which allows the article to reach the local market.
