MIGRATION TO U.K.
Mass Exodus
From Cyprus
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, June 19
The mass exodus of Cypriots bound for Britain to beat the July 1 deadline is reaching its climax by both sea and air, the “Guardian's” Nicosia correspondent reported. On this date, Britain’s new immigration restrictions come into force.
Cheap night flights to London are packed with Cypriots leaving the country to settle in Britain.
Nightly, Nicosia airport witnesses scenes of tearful separation as scores of relatives and friends, often headed by the village priest, travel many miles to say their farewells.
Emigrant departures from Cyprus in April' alone were well over 45.000, and this figure is expected to be easily exceeded during May and June.
More than 11,000 emigrated during the first four months of this year—nearly three times the total of the first four months of last year.
“The Times” said that fewer than 2000 applications to enter Britain under the new act have so far been received by the Labour Ministry. About 60 per cent, are from unskilled workers and most of the remainder are from professionally or technically aualified people whose knowledge or skills are needed in Britain.
