BIG LONDON FIRE

Explosions In Chemicals

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, June 16

A fire, believed to be London’s biggest since the German blitz in World War 11, swept through a chemical factory on the outskirts of eastern London yesterday. It raged for three hours before several hundred firemen brought it under control. Explosions from chemicals manufactured and stored in the buildings sent huge pillars of flames and black smoke hundreds of feet into the air. About 800 workers fled the area and police helped to evacuate 100 disabled men working there. No-one was injured. The fire started in a warehouse with £BO,OOO worth of chemicals and drugs ready for dispatch to laboratories, hospitals, and industrial firms.
