VICTIMISED MIGRANTS
•‘Dangers Look
Small”
(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—CopyrtpM) LONDON, June 1«.
“The Times" said yesterday that, so far. the dangers of migrants to Britain being victimised were small. In an editorial, the newspaper said: “In denying that the Commonwealth Immigrants Act will increase racial tension in Britain the Government are on much stronger ground than in their fdaintive insistence that reations between the United Kingdom and the rest of the Commonwealth will not be seriously damaged. “It is even possible that the measure—and this is almost its only redeeming feature—will eventually lessen the tension in Britain by making it possible, for the first time, to keep out misfits who have in the past contributed disproportionately to friction. The power to deport certain criminals should provide additional help in the same direction.
"Aga..ist this it may be argued that the act will encourage people to treat the immigrants as second-class citizens here on sufferance: ignorance of its terms could certainly lead to migrants being victimised." it said. "There may be something in this, but so far the dangers look small.”
