ORPHANS FOR N.Z.

Comment In Hong Kong

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONG KONG, June 17.

A New Zealand clergyman said in Hong Kong yesterday that church leaders in his country were urging the New Zealand Government to admit more orphans and refugees from Hong Kong.

The Rev. J. K. Fairbairn, minister of St, John's Presbyterian Church in Wellington, was commenting on an announcement by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) that New Zealand would admit 20 orphans from Hong Kong for adoption. He arrived on Friday night to gather first-hand information on the refugee situation in Hong Kong and Formosa. In an interview with the “Hong Kong Tiger Standard.” Mr Fairbairn said that "the National Council of Churches is continually urging that more should be done to help Hong Kong’s refugees.” Mr Fairbairn said that New Zealand was conducting a “Freedom from Hunger” campaign to raise £500,00(1 to aid refugees, and he promised to appeal for help on Hong Kong's behalf upon his return.

“We are deeply interested in helping towards a solution of refugee problems in Hons Kong and Taiwan,” he said.
