FUNDS FOR HOME

Fete To Help Marylands

To raise funds for improvements to the Marylands Boys’ Home at Middleton a garden fete will be held there on Saturday. The home now has a roll of 50 boys, the youngest seven and the oldest 16. The Brothers of St. John of God run this training home for educating mentally retarded boys. Although this Roman Catholic brotherhood of experienced nurses and teachers manages the home it is not a denominational establishment, and many of the boys there are members of other churches. Marylands has been taking boys for six years, and each year six or seven boys leave to enter a trade for which they have been prepard. The Marylands Boys’ Home Auxiliary assist by providing funds for improvements, furniture, and redecoration. It has provided a carpentry workshop for hobbies and instruction and a television set for entertainment.

On Saturday, the auxiliary will entertain parents and friends of the boys and anyone else interested in the work of the home in Halls road. One of the features of the afternoon will be a programme by the Canterbury Society of Magicians. And although it is St. Patrick’s Day, when other demands will be made on it, the Irish National Pipe Band will also be at Middleton. Pnevious fetes have raised about £lOOO.
