Food For The Hungry Responsibility Of World

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 14. Unused food surpluses while people were dying of starvation were an indictment of the world, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) told a Wellington Jewish Social Club men’s luncheon today

Mr Nash said that on June 16 C.0.R.5.0. would launch the "Freedom From Hunger” campaign in New Zealand as part of the Food and Agriculture Organisation's fiveyear project. On that day C.0.R.5.0. organisers intended to call on every home in New Zealand in an effort to collect £500,000 as part of New Zealand’s help with the project Mr Nash said that today there were 1600 million people in the world who did not get enough to eat—a number that could increase in proportion to the expected 6000 million people who would populate the world by the year 2000. One of the reasons for the increasing number of people

who were not getting enough to eat was that improvements in medical facilities had outstripped improvement in food production, so that more people were being kept alive Mr Nash said he did not believe that controlling the birth-rate was the answer This was probably impractical when dealing with so many millions. What ' was needed ultimately was an improved production of food. More land should be cultivated. more should be got from land already cultivated, and the land must be protected from locusts, parasites and floods. For this was needed education of both the people concerned and ourselves research and action.
