Oysters
Sir, —It would appear from the statement of the retailers that the wholesale groups both here and in Bluff are circumventing the Government’s instructions. I am sorry for the unfortunate and misused John Citizen. At no stage has he been considered by the wholesalers nor by the retailers. There is talk of a 6 per cent, increase and a 10 per cent, increase and a 50 per cent, increase, but nobody has mentioned the <*ost of a given quantity of oysters. I was misguided enough to purchase two lots of two dozen oysters. They cost 5s 3d for two dozen. Most of the oysters were about half an inch across. I would estimate, taking into account the quantity I received, the price of oysters has increased by about 300 per cent. That is, at the rate of 7 s 6d a dozen for normal-sized Stewart Island oysters. At the present price it would pay to receive oysters air freight from Sydney.—Yours, etc., FAIR DEAL. March 14, 1962.
