STUDY BY NURSES

Bursary Move Debated

The advisability of giving bursaries to senior nurses to enable them to study for university degrees was questioned yesterday by Mr E P. Shier, at a meeting of toe North Canterbury Hospital Board. The finance committee of the board reported that It had suggested to toe Department of Health that bursaries for nurses might lead to a higher standard in toe nursing service. “While I do not doubt toe value of higher education, I believe that toe board cannot afford to lose the services of senior nurses for such protracted periods as would be involved in this proposal.” said Mr Shier. Mr L. A. Bennett, Mr D MacMillan, and Mr V. J Corbett all spoke in favour of the proposal. Mr Bennett said that tutor sisters with university degrees had “brought something extra” into the nursing school.
