ROYAL SOCIETY
Projects To Mark Centenary
The publication of a modern version of the natural history of Canterbury and a series of lectures on science in Canterbury are among the projects planned this year to mark the centenary of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand, says the president of the branch (Mr W. Bowen) in his annual report.
The tenth New Zealand Science Congress will also be held in Christchurch from August 13 to 17 to coincide with the centennial activities.
A representative of the society on the Canterbury Museum Trust Board (Professor G. A. Knox) said that after a year's operation the planetarium had been an unqualified success. "A high standard has been set in the presentation of programmes and it has been used to advantage by education officers for the instruction of school children," he said.
Thirty-eight new members joined the branch in 1961 and the total membership now is about 435 persons. The average attendance at the 11 lec-ture-meetings conducted by the branch last year was 72. During the winter term a series of three lectures for school students was attended by senior pupils from local colleges.
