Extensive Damage To Wakanui

NELSON, February 28. The 63-ton coastal vessel Wakanui was extensively damaged in the bow after she struck the No. 2 wharf while berthing at Port Nelson early this morning. The 58-year-old vessel, owned by the Sullivan Shipping Company and commanded by Captain C. Wells, was rounding the northern corner of the main wharf against a strong ebb tide when the incident occurred

She was carrying general cargo from Wellington. The Wakanui. which was damaged by fire last August at Parapara. was put on the slip today for repairs and will be out of commission for two weeks.

Her general cargo service between Nelson. Wellington, and Golden Bay ports will he shared by the Te Aroha. Kohi and Portland The Wakanui is one of New Zealand’s oldest coasters in service.
