MILITARY SERVICE

600 Youths To Register

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28.

About 600 youths have failed to register for military service. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said today that a large proportion of these were Maoris.

“Applications for registration received up to January 31 totalled 17.070. This is an increase of 769 over the figure at January 19, a large proportion being received before the first ballot was held,” Mr Shand said.

“Earlier calculations of the numbers failing to register were based on an assumption of 18.000 liable to register. A more thorough examination of this figure had disclosed that inadequate allowance was made for youths in the regular forces, mental hospitals and penal i istitutions and for aliens. The revised estimate is now 17,700.”
