ADDINGTON MARKET Entries Sharply Lower In All Sections

Entries showed a sharp drop in all sections of the store lambs and sheep sale at Addington Market yesterday and, with a few exceptions, quality was probably not as good as last week.

Good quality lambs met a strong sale and tended to improve by about a shilling a head but small carry-over sorts showed no improvement. Some good quality hill country lambs sold well.

Two-tooth ewes generally met a weaker sale, except for the very best Romneys which were about on a par with recent rates. Some particularly good Romneys sold up to 75s a head. Fewer buyers followed the sale.

Older ewes met a similar market to last week and there were a lot of low condition sheep penned. Some outstanding draft lines made up to 56s for Romneys and 55s for halfbreds.

The store lamb and sheep entry totalled 1f1.742 head, compared with 30341 last week, and included 6589 store lambs (7853 last week), 4931 two-tooth ewes (8426), 8075 older ewes (14,021), and 147 wethers (241).

There were, however, several lines of good bill country lambs forward. The market, however, tended to improve on the lambs which offered the prospect of fattening by about a shilling a head with better competition from an active gallery but the small and plainer lambs showed no improvement and were about firm on last week. The market

opened on last week's closing rates and tended to improve on the quality lambs as the sale programed For ewe lambs the market was •bout the same although there was a good demand tor the few pens of top quality. Mediocre and plain ewe lambs made no more than .wether lamb values

The yarding totalled only 8075 head, compared with 14.021 last week and 11,390 the week before.

While the best sheep sold fully up to last week's rates, there was limited competition for the secondary sorts, although there was a satisfactory clearance at auction. The weight of wool the sheep were carrying was the most important factor in the market, and some of the late-shorn ewes with reasonable mouths looked a shade cheaper. However. there were other lateshorn ewes of known reputation which still commanded late rates.
