BUMP ON TRACK
Mishap To N.Z. Horse
(N.Z. Preu Assn.—Copyright) PERTH, Feb. 28. More details are now known of the track accident which cost the New Zealand gelding Cardigan Bay his second-to-none chance of winning the 1962 InterDominion Pacing Championship.
The accident occurred at * teaming track at Canmington near where Cardigan Bay is stabbed. The trainer, W. Wilkins, was watching a stable attendant, T. White, jogging Cardigan Bay when White suddenly fell from the sulky.
The horse, normally docile, took fright and bolted, with the capsized sulky trailing behind. Wilkins ran on to the track and attempted to grab the reins but the sulky, which was almost at righit angles to the horse, bumped Wilkins aside.
White said later he had been tipped from the sulky when it ran over a bump on the track. It was a jogging sulky, with springs, and White was catapulted in the air. He had no chance of retaining his grip on the reins.
Cardigan Bay had been the Inter - Dominion favourite almost since the declaration of handicaps. Veterinary advice yesterday was that Cardigan Bay would be unfit to race for at least three months.
