CZECH ART DISPLAY

Gallery Open At Night The new Rolleston avenue entrance to the McDougall Art Gallery and an exhibition of Czechoslovak graphic art were opened last evening by the Mayor, Mr G. Manning.

The new entrance is at the end of a lane between the Canterbury Museum and Christ’s College. Previously, the gallery could be entered only from the Botanic Gardens, which are closed at nights. “The gallery was the gift of Mr R. E. McDougall to Christchurch, and was opened in 1932.” said Mr Manning. “It has been 30 years before it has been made fully accessible to the people of Christchurch. “It will now be possible to open the 'gallery in the evenings, and this will give a new dimension to the cultural life of the city,’’ he said.

The gallery will be open three evenings a week.

The exhibition of contemporary graphic art from Czechoslovakia was brought to New Zealand through the Charge d’Affaires at the Czechoslovak Legation, Mr B. Matonoha. It consists of 113 prints, lithographs and engravings.

Also on exhibition for the first time was a new bronze of .Mr E. Armstrong, designer of the gallery. This was presented by Mr F. A. Shurrock and Mr G. D. Griffiths.
