Court Cleared At Auckland
( N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 28.
Evidence was given in a preliminary hearing in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland today against a man and a woman charged with using instruments on a number of women during the last three years with intent to procure miscarriages.
At the request of the police, Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., ordered the Court to be cleared “in the interests of public morals.” He also ordered the suppression of the names of all witnesses involved in the charges.
The accused are Leslie Warr Mackie, aged 65, a retired chemist, and Marjorie Jean Norton, aged 35, a nurse-receptionist, who face eight joint charges involving six women. Mackie faces a further six charges involving six women.
Mr D. M. Robinson appeared for both accused and Inspector A. C. B. Wade for the police. Witnesses gave evidence of making appointments with Mackie and of going to him to have the operation. A 40-year-old grandmother from a Bay of Plenty town said Mackie charged £lOO for the operation. The hearing was adjourned until tomorrow.
