Buka Tax Riots

John Teosin, leader of the Buka Island tax evaders and rioters, was today fined £2 for failing to pay the £2 annual head tax and sent to gaol for four months for having escaped from police custody on February 6.
Seven other natives were fined £2 for failing to pay the head tax. Charges against another 72 tax evaders, who paid their tax today, ■were dismissed. Under the Native Affairs Court Ordinance, Teosin was not asked to make a plea to the charge of escaping custoday. His case was heard in the District Count by Mr R. E. Ormsby, S.M. Mr Ormsby said the Government felt that Teosin and the other seven fined were ringleaders. and charges against the remainder should be dropped. The Buka Islanders fought off police efforts to collect the head tax earlier this month.
