FIRST CALLS AT LYTTELTON
League To Help Promotion
The Canterbury Progress League decided last evening to support the Chamber of Commerce in its attempts to increase the number of ships making Lyttelton their first port of call. Mr B. J. Drake, the chairman, said he had received a report that Timaru had trebled the number of ships making Timaru their first port of call.
Mr B. R. Homersham said it often took longer to get materials to Christchurch after they were unloaded at Auckland than it took to get supplies direct from the United Kingdom. Mr T. F. Maples said he knew of one large manufacturing firm which was moving from Christchurch to Auckland because of the delay in getting raw materials after they were unloaded at Auckland.
