Used Stolen Rifle To Hold Up Tokoroa Bank

ROTORUA, February 20. A man who held up a Tokoroa bank with a stolen rifle which he had earlier fired through the window of a sports store, was today convicted and remanded till March 13 for sentence by Mi G J Donne. S.M. Barry Glen Wilton, aged 22. a workman, of Kinlelth, pleaded guilty to stealing a rifle valued at £25. He also admitted wilfuly damaging a window valued at £46, breaking and entering the Tokoroa branch of the Bank of New South Wa’.es while armed and presenting a firearm.
Senior Sergeant R. D. Hardie said Wilton bought a box of 50 cartridges on February 13 ard later returned to the shop with a loaded rifle. A woman assistant was overpowered when she attempted to take the rifle from him. Wilton then
firec. a shot through the window ana held up Colin Peter Anderson who entered the shop and attempted to pacify Wilton. Wilton then entered the bank and pointed the rifle at an employee, Edward Gilbert Stallard, at the same time demanding the use of a car as he was “desperate.” Told a vehicle was at the rear of the bank Wilton ran from the premises, but was caught by Constable D. M. Lye. During the struggle the rifle was again fired.
