Epic Game Recalled

R. C. Murray’s epic match with the Australian amateur champion, T. Crow, in the New Zealand - Australia international golf contest at Kingston Heath, Victoria, late last year has been given special mention by the New Zealand non-playing captain (Mr J. A. Scouler) in his report on the tour.

The fate of the international rested on the result of the game and both players responded to the challenge by producing first-class golf and giving nothing away. Murray hit 16 greens in regulation figures in the morning and while Crow was not as consistent he was brilliant in recovery.

"By the time this match got to the 32nd hole we had most of the results pretty well fixed, which meant that if Murray finished all square we had the international won.” said Mr Scouler. "Both players knew the position and the strain was really on. Murray birdied the fifteenth to be 1 up, halved the sixteenth and holed a 10ft putt to win the seventeenth and the match, 2 and 1.” New Zealand won the encounter by 5 A matches to 3J.
