WILDING SHIELD
Auckland Beats Challenger t N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 11. Wellington failed to prise the Wilding Shield from Anckland's six-year-old grasp at Stan ley street courts on Saturday. R. G. Clarke, in his singles against J. E. Robson, showed at times a subtlety of spin and ang’’. and there was no look of the novice about J. B Souter’s cross-court backhand. But, in general, the challengers displayed a lack of tactics and court-craft that in the final count proved disastrous. Critical points and games which should have been fought out doggedly were allowed to slip away At other times when aggression was needed, caution was used instead. Results of Saturday's play (Auckland names first):— Singles.—J. E. Robson beat R G Clarke. 6-2, 6-3; A. S. Burns beat F. Scarlett. 6-1. 8-6; J. H. Lockington beat R. N. Hawkes. 3-6. 8-6, 7-5: K H. Long beat J. B Souter. 6-2. 4-6. 6-1. Doubles.—Robson and Burns beat Hawkes and Souter, 6-4. 6-0; Long and Lockington lost to Clarke and Scarlett, 4-6, 6-2. 6-4. Auckland won by 8 matches to 4.
