Women’s Softball KAIAPOI BEATS HAGLEY

Good Fielding In Upset Win

Kaiapoi provided a major upset in the Canterbury Softball Association's senior women's championship when it beat the strong Hagley side, containing five South Island representatives. Good fielding by Kaiapoi. a home run by J. Kimber and a three-base hit by N. Johnson were the deciding factors of the game. Monowal. producing one of its best displays of the season. allowed only four Christchurch runners on base to shut out Christchurch. 6-0. Results:— Kaiapoi 6, Hagley 4. Monowal 6, Christchurch 0. Monowal v. Christchurch L. Parish, Christchurch's first batter, made first on a bunt, which resulted in J. Scott having to leave the field with a knee iniury. She was replaced bv M. Hapuku. The next two batters were struck out and walked respectively and then L. Parish. In attempting to steal to third, was well taken by M. Hapuku. The next batter hit a catch with J. Batie the only runner to first safely Monowal was out to two force-outs and a catch.

Two catches and a force-out ended Christchurch's second, while Monowal was out to three catches. A catch and two forceouts held Christchurch three-up three-down in the next and in reply Monowai's L. Leask hit on. She went to third on a hard drive by C. Brown and scored on a passed ball. B. Makinson next batter up was walked. C. O'Byrne followed but was forced out. allowing C. Brown to score and then J. Batie hit the ball to score Makinson. The side was retired without addition to the score by a strike out and force out. In Christchurch’* fourth. K McCormick made first on an error, second on a passed ball and third on a fielder's choice with two away, but failed to score when the next batter was caught. Further strong batting by Monowai's L. Alston. L. Leask. C. Brown and B. Makinson enabled the side to score another three runs. Three catches held Christchurch and Monowal failed to score with two on base in the fifth A strike out and two catches ended Christchurch's sixth three-up three-down and Monowai was held scoreless with two on. In it* last Christchurch was held scoreless, with one runner on. to two catches and a strike out. Monowal did not require its last to win 6-6 Monowai's B. Maktnson pitched well for four strike-out* She did not concede a hit and gave away one walk. She wai backed up by good fielding *nd only four Christchurch batters managed to get to first safely. Because of the wedding of L Penney, Christchurch applied for nermission to play the game on Thursday, which was granted provided Monowal was agreeable.
