ROUGH WATER STOPS SKIER
Mile Short Of Target (N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, Feb. 10. A Queen Charlotte Sound water drier, Mr A. G. Burdekin, of Waterfall Bay, crossed Cook Strait on his skis to within a mile of the North Island on Saturday. There the water became too rough for ski-ing, and he had to abandon his intention to land.
Mr Burdekm, towed by the launch Rambler, owned and driven by Mr D. H. Bromley, of Anakiwa, left on his crossstrait ski from Tory Channel at 11.20 a.m., and was a mile off Ohau Point, the nearest North Island landfall, about an hour later. The state of the water at this stage, however, made water ski-ing impossible, and Mr Burdekin boarded the Rambler for the return journey to Tory Channel. He and Mr Bromley were back at the Channel not long after 1 p.m. After overcoming a jobble after leaving Tory Channel Mr Burdekin found conditions in mid-strait reasonably good for ski-ing. Approaching the North Island, however the water became progressively rougher until In the interests of safety any attempt at landing had to be abandoned.
