Haast-Paringa Road

Sir, —I thank correspondents for their comments on the Haast Pass road and the old stock track (definitely unsuitable for bicycles!). Of 32 miles from Lake Paring* to Haast river, the road is “virtually complete for five or six miles" at the northern end. and “formation of the road has been largely completed” for six miles at the southern end Work is apparently progressing well at the Haast bridge. My suggestion is that a temporary loop road should join the northern and southern ends of the Paringa-Haast road connecting to the Haast bridge, using as much as possible of the completed road, and. where practicable, following the stock track. Some temporary bridging would be wanted Where ground is firm, it is not a long job to form a one-lane road, allowing sharp corners and steep grades where necessary to reduce cost and time of construction.—Yours. etc., ARTHUR LUSH. February 9. 1962.
