£500 LIBEL CLAIM
Correspondence In Paper (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 7. The Deputy-Mayor of Henderson, Assid Khaleel Corban, today claimed damages of £5OO from the publishers of the Waitakere Gazette, Ltd., of Henderson, for an alleged libel published in the company’s newspaper. After hearing Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., reserved his decision. Mr Corban, in his statement of claim, said that the “Gazette” “falsely and maliciously printed and published” a letter in the editorial correspondence columns which “seriously injured” his character and reputation in his offices.
The letter, printed in the “Gazette" on June 13, 1961, said: “Threepence might not be anything to Cr. Corban, who, I have noticed, throughout his term as councillor, has only been concerned with the interests of big business.” The allegations are denied by the company, represented by Mr M. A. Shanahan. Mr D. S. Beattie, counsel for the plaintiff, with Mr D. Shepherd, said the correspondent, “Ratepayer,” could not be found.
The manager of the newspaper, Randle Ivan Wilfred Wackrow, and the managing director, lan Sydney Clews, gave evidence of not seeing the letter before it was published in the newspaper on June 13, 1961. Both said that they considered the letter was fair comment.
