Boxer’s Wife Stops Fight

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 6. Mrs George Barnes, wife of the former Australian boxing champion, last night stopped his title fight with the current welter-weight champion, Gary Cowburn. The sudden end came while Barnes was still on his feet, and it created an angry outburst against the referee, Vic Patrick. Barnes was taking heavy punishment in the sixth round at Sydney Stadium, when Mrs Barnes, who was sitting in the front row, jumped to her feet. She spoke with her father, Jim Barker, who manages Barnes. Barker immediately jumped on to the apron of the ring and shouted at Patrick. Patrick twice asked Barker: “Do you want it stopped?" When Barker said, "Yes, yes,” Patrick jumped between the two flutters. Mrs Barnes was crying bitterly when she finally persuaded her father to intervene. All Barnes's friends agreed the fight should have been stopped.
