ANCHOR LOST BY DREDGE

Search In Deep Mud The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s new suction dredge Peraki lost an anchor recently and all efforts to recover it have been unsuccessful so far.

The anchor, which weighs three tons 2j cwt was lost when the Peraki was dredging alongside the eastern extension works.

A buoy was put out to mark the spot and an intensive search made for two days. A diver was used for some of the time. Other searches have been made in the last month.

The mud is 200 ft deep where the anchor was dropped. and is stirred up by dredging. Mr J. A. Cashin, the board’s engineer-in-chief, said yesterday there was a possibility that the Peraki itself would find the anchor with its suction-cutter. The Peraki carries two anchors, and when it came from Britain it brought a spare.

The Peraki was given its first annual survey and overhaul from December 11, Mr Cashin reported. A strip 4ft deep above waterline on the hull was sandblasted where some corrosion was evident. Timber decks had been recaulked and the overhaul of machinery was proceeding afloat.
