WATER LILY IN FLOWER
First Since 1955 “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, February 7. The star botanical attraction at the Auckland Domain winter garden, the giant Amazon water lily (Victoria regina amazonica) flowered on Sunday night for the first season since 1955.
The creamy white petals of the first bud unfolded shortly before 7 p.m. As the flowering cycle of the nocturnal flower lasts only two days—the petals turn a deep pink on the second day—the garden was kept open until 9 p_m to allow visitors to see the lily This year's plant is the first to be grown from seed raised in New Zealand.
The first Amazon lily to be grown in New Zealand opened its flower on January 20. 1951 It was raised from a seed obtained from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kow.
A good year tor the lily was 1954, when 18 buds came into flower. Since 1955 no blooms have occurred although the plant has been set down each year
