Christchurch Traffic
Sir,—Councillor McLean says the answer to the pedestrian traffic at main interI sections and the Square is I underground subways. Cr. i McLean also stated they have them in San Francisco. Can she name any intersection in San Francisco where they have these? They used to have them in Chicago but because of cost of maintenance, lighting, and police patrols they proved unsatisfactory and were filled in. On underground parking areas. Cr. McLean states our ground water conditions are the same as in San Francisco, where they have underground areas. They have one in Union Square, which is on the side of a hill approximately 60 feet above Market street, the main artery underground for all stormwater and sewage in this area and the fall is towards this. This is totally different from Christchurch conditions. Let us get on with one-way traffic in main city streets, more traffic lights, and four or five-storey parking buildings. Traffic lighting costs would be halved with one-way traffic streets.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. February 4, 1962.
