STOLE UNION FUNDS
Sentence Of Three Months’ Gaol ( N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, Feb. 7. William Carol Campbell, aged 51. a freezing worker, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, to be followed by one year’s probation, when he pleaded guilty to the theft of £l2O 12s 4d from the Otago and Southland Freezing Workers’ Union before Mr M. B. Scully in the Magistrate's Court at Masterton.
Campbell liad been secretary of the Invercargill branch of the union for 18 months, it was stated. He was off work for a period after an illness and during this time used money which he had collected for the union. He came to the Wairarapa late in 1961 and worked in the Waingawa freezing works. For Campbell, Mr B. H. Blackwood said he had saved £4O since December with the intention of paying back what he had used of the union’s funds. It was only after being off wwk with no income that Campbell had begun to steal the union money.
“You were placed in a position of trust,” the Magistrate said. “You not only betrayed that trust, but stole contributions of your fellow workers. You knew what you were doing and can expect no sympathy.”
