At Present

Business in the United Kingdom in New Zealand seeds for shipment has been limited, as resellers have been booking orders at under first-hand prices. In Its monthly produce report, the London Office of the Bank of New Zealand states that shipments now would arrive too late for United Kingdom spring sowing and merchants are not prepared to risk a carry-over at the existing price level.

New Zealand mother white clover seed for arrival January or early February has been sold at up to 586 s per cwt c i f. and permanent pasture at 540 s Shippers have been quoting 10s to 20s more.

A few sales of New Zealand mother perennial have been reported at 135 s to 137 s 6d. with 99/90 or better analysis, for February or early March arrival. Prices quoted for shipment have been 150 s. with permanent pasture 5s less. Danish early perennial can be bought at 105 s. and Danish Italian can be obtained at 100 s or less c.i.f. United Kingdom ports. United Kingdom merchants still hold fair stocks of maple peas. Supplies of cheap English maples have prevented any improvement in the price of imported lines. They have also kept down prices of surplus New Zealand supplies from the 1961 harvest for shipment. No. 1 grade maples have been sold at 44s to 45s a cwt. c.i.f.. with a few sales of best quality at 45s to 475. Offers for No. 2 or ungraded samples have been down to 40s The last business in new crop New Zealand No. 1 maples was at 48s c.i.f.. as against the earliest forward sales of 43s to 455. Quotations are now at 50s, but no sales have so far resulted.
