ATHLETICS Snell Out-Sprints U.S. Runners In Half-Mile

WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. Two New Zealanders. P G. Snell and M. G. Halberg. and Englishman M. B. S. Tulloh won the three major events in the last of the sponsored series of athletics meetings at Basin Reserve. Wellington, tonight. All three thrilled a crowd of 8000, recording times for their respective distances faster than those previously set up in Wellington. Snell won the half mile in Imin 49.9 sec; Halberg took the mile in 4min 2.7 sec; and the little bare-footed Tulloh scampered over the dew to win the two miles in Bmin 39.25ec Opened Up Gap In the 880 yards, the American, E. Cunliffe. shot into the lead from the gun. opening up a gap of 15 yards on J. Bork (U.S.) and Snell, and was well ahead at the bell in 53.8 sec.

Snell surged through to second place but at the final bend was then overtaken again by Bork. It was a bold effort but Snell gathered himself, lengthened his stride, and lunged past Bork 50 yards from the tape. The mile developed into a tremendous three-man battle in the last lap. Halberg Dupree (U.S.). Karl (Marlborough), and Davies (Putaruru) kept a tight file during the first three laps, covered I in 3min 2sec. Karl went into the lead at ths bend, with Davies in second place, but Halberg timing his challenge perfectly. 1 passed Karl and moved up to Davies’s shoulder in the [straight In a tremendous final 40 yards.
