TUNNEL TO PORT

Record Drive For Month

The 609 ft of tunnel driven last month was the best distance for a month so far, the Ministry of Works said in its report to the Christ-church-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday. This brought the length of the tunnel to 2367 ft.

The manpower employed had Increased to a daily average of 130. The country traversed during the pericd was generally easy-to-drill rock of good quality, the report said. It was well over 1000 ft since the last steel support arch was placed in the tunnel. Good progress had been made with excavation of the portal area at the Lyttelton end. It was not intended to proceed with full-face tunnelling at the portal, but a small drive would be carried through to link with the Heathcote end and to act as a ventilation and drainage duct for the remainder of the tunnelling operations. During the week ended on January 13. four full-face rounds were drilled and fired on one day and three rounds were drilled and fired on each of three days. This resulted in a record advance of 159 ft for that week.
