SWEPT OFF ROCKS

Man Drowned Near Westport

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, February 4. A fisherman was drowned when he was swept off Cod rocks, near Charleston, at 3 p.m. today. He was: William Henry Powell, aged 54. married, a mine manager, of Westport. Mr Powell was snapperfishing off the rocks with Mr L Hale, of Westport. He was on a high ledge and went down to a lower ledge to release his line which had been caught in a fissure. While he was on the ledge he was knocked into the sea by a large wave. He managed to hold on to the slippery rocks for a few minutes but the strong undertow took him out to sea. His body was recovered six miles down the coast about 6.30 p.m. Mr Hale, who tried to rescue Mr Powell, also was swept into the sea but managed to fight his way back to the rocks. He was admitted to the Westport Hospital suffering from abrasions and shock.
