Women’s Softball CHRISTCHURCH BEATEN

Hagley Wins, 12-6

In Saturday’s games in the Canterbury Women’s Softball Association’s senior championships, Hagley, after superior hitting in the last two innings beat the coleaders of the competition, Christchurch, 12-fi. Monowai, which was leading the championship with Christchurch, had too much experience for Kaiapoi. The general standard of play was not particularly high, no doubt due to the long break since competition games in December.

Results:—Hagley 12, Christchurch 6; Monowai 11, Kaiapoi 2. Hagley v. Christchurch Hagley’s first batter, J. Timm s made first base on errors and stole to second. With the next batter caught out. L. Honeyman drove the ball hard, causing errors, to allow Timms to score and place her on third base from where she scored on an error. The side was retired without addition to the score.

In reply Christchurch scored three runs on errors after hits by K. McCormick, L. Penney and L. Hay and one run on a sacrifice by J. Innes. Hagley tied the score in the second Innings when after hits by M. Gaskell and C. Mullaliy and a two-base hit by L. Honeyman, two runners scored. Christchurch was scoreless with one runner on.

Hagley was three up three down in the next innings and Innes scored on errors. Hagley evened the score again in the fourth innings when ah overthrow allowed Gaskell to second base.

Christchurch’s first two batters fell victim to a good double play between K. Timms and Gaskell and the third out was taken by Timms with loaded bases. A hard drive by Honeyman enabled Hagley to score a run with a homer on errors but the side was out without addition to the score. Christchurch was held scoreless with loaded bases.

Hagley gained an advantage in the sixth Innings when with two runners on and two batters out Mullaliy drove the ball deep to the outfield for a home run on errors. The next batter was caught out to end the innings. Christchurch’s J. Phillips forced an outfield error to reach third base and scored on a fielder’s choice for the only run of the Innings. Hagley in its last innings was two out and two on base and Joan Irving drove the ball to the outfield for a home run. Christchurch, trailing by six runs in its last innings, saw its first batter out to a pop fly. L. Parish made second on a hit by McCormick. J. Hudson hit to the outfield where Mullaliy took the catch. She relayed the ball to T. Tuhon, who tagged the runner off the base for a good double to end the game. Box score— Hagley, 2,2, 0, 1. 1, 3. 3—12. Christchurch, 4. 0. 1, 0. 0, 1 0— 6. Monowai v. Kaiapoi Kaiapoi was scoreless with a runner on third base in the first innings and Monowai replied with its first twp .batters away. J. Batie drove the ball hard through the outfield for a home run. J. Scott brought I in another run on a three base hit and scored herself on a hit by E. Law. Kaiapoi was scoreless with one on to two catches and a strike out while Monowai with some hard drives forced Kaiapoi into fielding errors with the greasy bail to add four runs to its total.

M. Wright opened Kaiapoi’s account in the third Innings when, after hitting on, stole to second and third, and scored on a passed ball. Kaiapoi with improved fielding held Monowai three up three down. F. Mcllwrick, Kaiapoi’s first batter up, made first safely on an error and with the next batter caught out, A. Power drove the ball deep to the outfield to score Mcllwrick, and place herself on third. The next two batters were struck out without addition to the score.

B. Makinson after getting to second on errors scored Monowai’s only run in reply on a hit by N. Beale, and a fielder's choice. Kaiapoi was held three up three down in its last three innings by solid pitching and fielding and Monowai with some good drives added three runs to its total to win without taking its last innings. 11-2.
