La Gloria Gives Rivals 60 Yards And Wins

BLENHEIM, February 4.

La Gloria continued to improve her very sound record on the circuit when she gave her rivals up to 60 yards start and a beating in the Kekerengu Handicap at Blenheim yesterday.

La Gloria made a brilliant beginning and running into the last six furlongs she was fourth. Gazeaway led then by four lengths from Kingwarned and Oakleigh Lad was a clear third, three lengths further back.

Oakleigh Lad ran up to Gazeaway in the lead on the home turn and mastered the pacemaker outside the furlong, but La Gloria continued a powerful run out in the middle of the track and pegged Oakleigh Lad back in the last stride. Half a head separated these, then there were four lengths to Gazeaway Snow Globe, which . lost her chance by breaking at the start, made ground for fourth but was six lengths back. Kingwarned, which broke just outside the last furlong, settled down again for fifth, and then came Mina Lass and High Note at the head of the others. Run Of Race Milngavie and Johnny Warrior won their divisions of the Havelock Handicap after both had received the run of the race to the straight. Milngavie ran from the trailing position past the pacemaker, Kilkivan, which broke at the half-furlong, and drew out to win by two lengths from Adio Star, which shared the second line with the winner tp the straight. Blonde Piper, third equal with Untrue to the straight, outflnished the latter for third by a length. He was a long neck behind Adio Star. In the second division Wee Lottie tried for an all-the-way win but Johnny Warrior worked out from the trailing position inside the furlong to challenge ,and drew out to win by three lengths Wee Lottie beat Estimation, which had his chance, by a length and a half for second and Sara Black was a weakening fourth four lengths back.

Won Well Van Brabant and Soanfra both recorded very good performances to win their divisions of the Seddon Handicap. Van Brabant followed Perfect Scott, Sedway, Count Medoro and Elizabeth Dee into the last half-mile of the first division, improved on the home turn to join Sedway in the second line at the straight entrance and drew out over the last furlong to win by a length and a half from Perfect Scott Sedway battled on for third half a length back. She lasted for that place by a neck from Borodin, and Gay Tartan, which broke at the start, led in the others. Soanfra chased Faltuna and Gothic into the last halfmile of the second division, was still behind these two at the straight entrance, but came to the front easily just inside the last furlong He beat Faltuna by four lengths and Gothic was a tiring third six lengths further back. There was a half a length then to Rolex, which just beat Elaine Salute. Back To Form Trade Talk, which had been unplaced in his six earlier starts this season, two as a trotter and four as a pacer, made a successful start on the circuit when he outstayed the trotters in the Kaikoura Handicap. It was a race in which the limit horses were completely outclassed. Oakleigh Lad, from the 36 yards mark, worked into the

lead six furlongs out and was followed to die straight by Trade Talk and Bonny Rachael, both off 48 yards, with La Gloria from the back mark of 108 yards closest of the others. Trade Talk closed on Oakleigh Lad at the furlong and drew away to beat him comfortably by three lengths La Gloria fought on gamely for third four lengths back, beating Bonny Rachael by three lengths for that place Spring Lass and World Peace did best of the others but they were beaten off Outsider Siki, the 13/12 favourite of 14, ran from the trailing position into the lead at the furlong in the Picton Handicap and drew away to beat Promotion by two lengths Promotion improved from the middle of the field on the home turn and was fifth and not far from the lead at the

straight entrance He pegged back the pacemaker. Tiny Trews, inside the furlong and ran the distance out half a length better than Hiya. ■ strong finisher from the middle of the field.

Thrift, equal third most of the way, battled on for fourth three lengths back Great Mystery, which broke at the start, came from way back • for fifth and was followed In by Avondale Heir, which had every chance, and Tiny Trews. Hustler Wins Hustler which had been knocked down at the start of the Marlborough Cup earlier in the day and took no part in that race, atoned with a convincing win against the sprinters in the President’s Handicap. Considering she had been successful over a sprint distance at Nelson last Monday. Hustler was at lucrative odds, paying £l5 7s and £3 Ils Hustler wm in the leading division throughout She joined Simmonds tn front on the home turn and ran beyond challenging distance just inside the last furlong The hot favourite, Adios Duenna, was Hustler’s closest rival at the finish but was three lengths back Adios Duenna had received the run of the race to the straight but Moneymusk, a length back third, improved three places in the run home He outflnished Montaigne by a head, and Spangled Princess was a string finisher for fifth wide out on the track.
