White Skies Wins Gore Cup

(New Zealand Press Association)

GORE, February 4

Eighth favourite in an eighthorse field, the Washdyketrained White Skies upset calculations in the Gore Cup, feature race on the flrst day of the Gore Racing Club’s summer meeting on Saturday.

It was the first success recorded by White Skies in open company. The favourite, Barrister, did not threaten danger and finished fifth. Another Washdyke galloper. Mary Tee, won the open sprint, the Croydon Handicap, to complete the double.

The combination returned a doubles dividend of £283 19s 6d. The meeting was conducted in showery weather and heavy rain during the morning, on top of a hard foundation, made the track slippery. By the time the fifth race had been run there had been four falls in races as well as near mishaps and another horse came to grief in a preliminary. As a result of the rain the attendance was the smallest at a Gore meeting for some years. The totalisator on-course handled £19,261 compared with £2B 366 on the first day last year a decrease of £9105. The on-course double of Mangus and Panther returned a dividend of £4l Is for £l.
