MELBOURNE, February 4 The Sydney champion, Sky High, had little more than a working gallop to win the £2OOO Lightning Stakes at Flemington yesterday
The jockey, G. Moore, who rode Sky High, said after the race: “He is the only horse in the world who can come back from two miles to five furlongs ” Moore said he could have led at any time on Sky High and never had an anxious moment A feature of Sky High’s performance was that he ran 59sec on a track which was not suitable for record times The time was only three-quarters of a second outside the Flemington record
Sky High is the first horse to win the Lightning Stakes twice He won it last vear as a three-year-old
Sky High started at 10/9 on after drifting from 6/4 on. He won by two lengths from Aquanita (20/1) with My Peak (7/1» two lengths away third. The Australian Jockey Club vice-chairman and owner (Mr B Crowley) said after the race that he had not decided on a definite programme for Ski High in Melbourne in the autumn He would run in either the weight-for-age St. George Stakes (nine furlongs) at Caulfield on February 24. or in the Futurity Stakes (seven furlongs) an the same track a week later Sky High now has had 29 starts for 18 wins, four seconds and five third® and has won £52 900 in stakes.
After he ends his autumn programme in Melbourne he will return to Sydney where his main mission will be the £lO.OOO Invitation Cup (one mile and a half) at Randwick on April 14 Moore will ride Sky High in all his autumn engagements. Dhaulagiri Wins
A luckv run alone the rails tn the last furlong enabled Dhaulaeiri to score a close win tn the Blarney Stakes at Flemington later tn the day Nilarco which drifted off the fence, would have had to shift hack only a fraction and Dhaulagiri would have been pushed out of the race.
Dhaulagiri (5/4 on) won by half a length from Havelock
(7/1) and Nilarco (16/1) was a short half-head away third. At the two furlongs. G. Lane on Dhaulagiri, was boxed in on the rails behind Nilarco, with Havelock on the outside of them. Then Nilarco which was tiring, began to drift off the fence
In a flash Lane started to force Dhaulagiri through Once the horse got his shoulders into the opening he continued to force through, and went on to win Results:—
