(NZ. Press Assn—Copyright) PERTH. February 4. Western Australia fought gallantly yesterday for a first Innines lead against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield match. Western Australia is the only stale to have done this in the current season. The Western Australian skipper. B. Shepherd (S®> and J. Parker (54) defied above-cen-tury heat and tight New South Wales bowling In the battle tor runs. At tea. Western Australia had scored 22U tor eight, a lead of 11 runs on New South Wales's first innings 218. Western Australia began today with 68 for three. The first SO minutes brought only 64 runs. At lunch. Western Australia was 161 for four. Shepherd was the only casualty. At that stage. A. Davidson had one for 18. Mlsson none for 21. Benaud none for 46, Martin three for 64. and Simpson none for 11. Parker was 53 not out and Smith 2. Benaud had Parker caught by Simpson Immediately after lunch. Slater went only 11 runs later and Western Australia was fighting with backs to the wall. At stumps New South Wales was 41 for two In the second innings.
