Mclntyre Spins Out Wellington

AUCKLAND, February 4. Auckland, mainly through the excellent bawling of J. M. Mclntyre, a 17-year-old left-arm slow bowler, held la strong poaitaon over Welllington, the Plunket Shield I holders, at the end of the second day at Edlen Park on 'Saturday. i Wellington's first innings I began at the start of play ■ yesterday and by 255 pm. the champions had been bundled out for 135 runs, 110 runs behind Auckland. At stumps Auckland were 125 for six wickets in its second innings with a lead of 235 runs and four wickets in hand. The position is even stronger by the fact it seems likely the pitch tomorrow '.will be difficult for batting. The grassless surface was cracking up badly at the end of play yesterday and the ball is unlikely to bounce truly tomorrow. Quick Wickets The Wellington innings started slowly, but two quick changes brought two quick wickets, L. A. Clark bowling T. G. McMahon and R. M. Harris dismissing B. A. G. Murray. This was the signal for Mclntyre to take over and i for the rest of the innings |he continually harassed the ! batsmen. He dropped imi mediately on to a length, his I control was excellent and his [variations of flight and spin [were cleverly disguised. i Only B. W. Sinclair played | him well and even he was I utterly trapped leg-before, i Wellington's heroes were J. |E. F. Beck and L. C. Butler, i who stuck tight when it 'seemed as if Wellington I might have to follow on. But- ' ler was in considerable pain from his left hand which he | damaged while fielding on I Friday and he should not ■ have batted at all. An X-ray

examination later showed a suspected fracture and he was told not to take any further part in the game. Beck was ill during the luncheon break, suffering from an illness brought on by mosquito bites. Neither bandied Mclntyre well, but they stayed there. Last Wicket Stand B. D. Morrison batted brightly, and with J. Parson scored 33 for the last wicket. Auckland, too, started their second innings badly, R. M. Harris and W. R. Playle being out for 16, but then S. G. Gedye and R. W. Morgan took the score to 58. Parson caused a minor breakthrough by bowling •both Gediye and P. P. W. Morris, but J. G. Kemp produced a delightful little innings of 27. Morgan was in excellent touch for 55 and then mishit a terrible ball from Murray in the last over and gave Morrison an easy catch. Scores:— AUCKLAND First Innings .. ..246 Second Innings S. G.
